Stainless Steel Flanges

Stainless steel flange is a standardized disc-shaped connecting component made from stainless steel. Its primary function is to create a detachable, pressure-tight seal between pipes, valves, or equipment by bolting two flanges together with a gasket in between.

Definition & Function

Stainless steel flange is a standardized disc-shaped connecting component made from stainless steel. Its primary function is to create a detachable, pressure-tight seal between pipes, valves, or equipment by bolting two flanges together with a gasket in between. Designed to maintain structural integrity and sealing reliability under demanding conditions-such as high pressure, temperature extremes, and corrosive environments-stainless steel flanges are widely used in industries requiring high hygiene standards, corrosion resistance, or high-temperature and high-pressure performance.

Structural Features & Classification

1. Basic Structure

  • Flange Body: The main pressure-bearing component, with thickness and diameter designed according to pressure ratings.
  • Bolt Holes: Evenly distributed around the circumference to accommodate bolts for fastening.
  • Sealing Face: Common types include raised face (RF), flat face (FF), and ring-type joint (RTJ), each influencing sealing effectiveness.
  • Neck Structure: For example, welding neck flanges (WN) feature a tapered neck for welding to pipes, making them suitable for high-pressure and high-temperature applications.

2. Types by Connection Method

  • Welding Neck Flange: Installed by welding, offering high strength for critical applications.
  • Threaded Flange: Connected via threads, avoiding welding and facilitating disassembly.
  • Blind Flange: Used to seal the end of a pipeline, allowing for system maintenance.
  • Lapped Joint Flange: Used with a stub end, simplifying alignment during installation.

Material Properties & Grades

The performance of stainless steel flanges depends heavily on material selection, primarily categorized into two types:

1. Austenitic Stainless Steel

  • Properties: Contains nickel and chromium, offering excellent corrosion resistance, toughness, and non-magnetic properties.
  • Common Grades:

304 (ASTM A182 F304): General-purpose, resistant to mildly corrosive media.

316L (ASTM A182 F316L): Contains molybdenum, is resistant to chloride ion corrosion, ideal for marine and chemical environments.

321/347H (ASTM A182 F321/F347H): Stabilized with titanium or niobium, resistant to intergranular corrosion and suitable for high temperatures (up to 800°C).

904L (ASTM A182 F904L): High alloy content, resistant to strong corrosive media like concentrated sulfuric and phosphoric acids.

2. Duplex Stainless Steel

  • Properties: Combines austenitic and ferritic structures, offering high strength (approximately twice that of 316L) and excellent stress corrosion cracking resistance.
  • Common Grades:

F51/F60 (2205 and Super Duplex): Resistant to chloride corrosion, used in subsea pipelines and chemical reactors.

F65 (2507 Super Duplex): Higher strength and corrosion resistance for extreme environments.

Application Fields

  • Energy and Power: Connections in high-temperature steam pipelines in nuclear and thermal power systems, requiring materials with high-temperature stability (e.g., 347H flanges).
  • Petrochemical Industry: Used in refining units and sour gas pipelines requiring resistance to hydrogen sulfide corrosion (e.g., duplex grades F51/F55).
  • Shipbuilding and Offshore Engineering: Seawater cooling systems and subsea oil pipelines requiring resistance to saltwater corrosion (e.g., 316L or duplex flanges).
  • Food and Pharmaceutical Industry: Hygienic pipeline connections requiring smooth, non-porous surfaces (e.g., polished 316L flanges).
  • Construction and Machinery: Central air conditioning systems and high-pressure fluid transport equipment, emphasizing sealing reliability and longevity.

Selection & Standards

Selecting stainless steel flanges requires consideration of:

  • Pressure-Temperature Ratings: Based on standards like ASME B16.5 or EN 1092-1, matching system design parameters.
  • Media Compatibility: Material selection based on corrosion resistance (e.g., 316L or duplex for chloride-rich environments).
  • Welding and Installation Requirements: Welding neck flanges require compatible welding materials, while threaded flanges need corrosion-resistant threads.

Development Trends

  • High-Performance Materials: Increased use of high-alloy stainless steels (e.g., 6Mo alloys) and customized duplex steels for more demanding conditions.
  • Lightweight Design: Structural optimization through finite element analysis to reduce material usage without compromising pressure-bearing capacity.
  • Smart Monitoring: Integration of sensors for real-time monitoring of sealing conditions and leak prevention.
