How to Verify Alloy Steel Pipe Quality Before Shipment? Full Pre-Shipment Inspection Checklist

May 18, 2026 Leave a message

Most overseas buyers' biggest worry in importing alloy steel pipes: the goods received are inconsistent with the contract, with unqualified material, wrong grade, unstable size, or hidden defects. Once unqualified goods are shipped, return and replacement will cause huge time cost and economic loss.

Therefore, professional pre-shipment inspection is the core link to guarantee import quality. This article provides a full set of universal inspection checklists for global buyers, which can be directly used for supplier audit and on-site inspection.

1. Material Chemical Composition Verification (Most Critical)

Verify Cr, Mo, V, Ni and other alloy element content strictly in accordance with ASTM/ASME standards. Many low-quality suppliers reduce alloy content to cut costs, resulting in unqualified high temperature and pressure resistance.

Our Service: We provide PMI spectrum testing reports for each batch of goods to ensure 100% compliance with standard chemical composition.

2. Mechanical Property Test Verification

Including tensile strength, yield strength, elongation and hardness test. These data directly determine whether the pipe can withstand extreme working conditions.

Standard Requirement: Each heat batch must provide independent mechanical test reports, not batch-general reports.

3. Full-Body Non-Destructive Testing (NDT)

Include UT ultrasonic testing, ET eddy current testing and HT hydraulic pressure testing. Detect tiny internal cracks, pores and inclusions that cannot be seen by naked eyes.

Buyer Trap Reminder: Some suppliers only test sample pipes rather than 100% full-body testing, leading to hidden defective products in bulk goods.

4. Dimensional Tolerance & Appearance Inspection

Check outer diameter, inner diameter, wall thickness, straightness and surface finish. Unqualified dimensions will cause installation failure and sealing leakage.

5. Heat Treatment Process Confirmation

Heat treatment determines the creep resistance and stability of alloy pipes. Qualified alloy pipes must undergo strict normalization and tempering treatment, with complete heat treatment records.

6. Document Compliance Verification

Complete export documents include: MTR material test report, EN 10204 3.1 certificate, NDT test report, heat treatment report, export license and packing list.
